GM has issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) to address a problem with the airbag light on certain 2021 SUVs.

Driver movement can disrupt the electrical connection to the seat-mounted inboard airbag system in certain 2021 model year GM full-size SUVs. If this occurs, the driver information center will display a “Service Restraints System” message to the driver before resistance to the connection eventually prevents deployment of the airbag.

The TSB involves the following GM full-size SUVs:
  • 2021 Chevy Tahoe
  • 2021 Chevy Suburban
  • 2021 Cadillac Escalade
  • 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV
  • 2021 GMC Yukon
  • 2021 GMC Yukon XL

General Motors has issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) to address a problem with the airbag light on certain 2021 GM full-size SUVs.

According to the TSB document that GM sent to dealerships, driver movement can disrupt the electrical connection to the seat-mounted inboard airbag system in certain 2021 model year GM full-size SUVs. If this occurs, the driver information center will display a “Service Restraints System” message to the driver before resistance to the connection eventually prevents deployment of the airbag.

This seat-mounted inboard airbag system is supplemental and is not required under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, GM says. A problem that can cause an airbag malfunction such as this could otherwise be subject to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall, but seeing as the seat airbag is not required by law, the problem is being addressed via TSB.

Dealers are instructed to inspect and replace the seat airbag wiring harness in affected vehicles. These repairs should take a little over an hour to complete and will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner. The TSB involves the following GM full-size SUVs:

  • 2021 Chevy Tahoe
  • 2021 Chevy Suburban
  • 2021 Cadillac Escalade
  • 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV
  • 2021 GMC Yukon
  • 2021 GMC Yukon XL
This TSB program began in December 2020 and will remain in effect until December 31st, 2022. The bulletin will address the same issue that we covered in a previous article in which customers reported experiencing problems with the seat-mounted supplementary airbag control module under the driver’s seat.

GM has also issued other TSBs for certain 2021 model year full-size SUV models, including one to fix a minor issue with the LED lights on the 2021 Tahoe and Suburban and another over trailering labels on the 2021 Yukon and Yukon XL.
